James was born on April 21st, 1896.  James' father was James William Stiles and his mother is Ellen Harned.  His paternal grandparents were David Stiles Jr. and Martha Daugherty.  He had six brothers and two sisters, named David, John, William, Jacob, Oscar, Lewis, Fannie and Nellie.  He is the youngest of the nine children.
