Burch was born on December 8th, 1906.  Burch's father was Ben Pirtle Stiles and his mother was Eleanor Hurst.  His paternal grandfather was Charles Valley Stiles and his paternal grandmother is Ellen Neff.  He had three brothers and three sisters, named Charles, Ben, Joseph, Ruth, Lena and Ida.  He is the oldest of the seven children.
