William was born on December 5th, 1887.  William's father was Joe Lucien Shipley and his mother is Hammie McKay.  His paternal grandparents were Randolph  Selmon Shipley and Somira Ellen Stiles.  He had three brothers and two sisters, named Lucien, Roy, Winfield, Gladys and Grace.  He is the second oldest of the six children.
