Robert was born on October 22nd, 1934.  Robert's father is John Stiles Shipley and his mother is Dorothy Swymer.  His paternal grandfather was John Selmon Shipley and his paternal grandmother is Sally Gross.  He has a brother and three sisters, named John, Jo, Mary and Judith.  He is the third oldest of the five children.
