Marshall was born on November 17th, 1920.  Marshall's father was Gerald Knox Shipley and his mother is Ruth Sheets.  His paternal grandfather was James Lewis Shipley and his paternal grandmother is Alice Emma Peverly.  He has two sisters named Margaret and Ruth.  He is the youngest of the three children.
