John was born on September 5th, 1932.  John's father is John Stiles Shipley and his mother is Dorothy Swymer.  His paternal grandfather was John Selmon Shipley and his paternal grandmother is Sally Gross.  He has a brother and three sisters, named Robert, Jo, Mary and Judith.  He is the second oldest of the five children.
