Gladys was born on January 17th, 1897.  Gladys' father was Joe Lucien Shipley and her mother is Hammie McKay.  Her paternal grandparents were Randolph  Selmon Shipley and Somira Ellen Stiles.  She had four brothers and a sister, named Lucien, William, Roy, Winfield and Grace.  She is the fourth oldest of the six children.
