Allen was born on September 8th, 1904.  Allen's father was John Selmon Shipley and his mother is Sally Gross.  His paternal grandparents were Randolph  Selmon Shipley and Somira Ellen Stiles.  He has four brothers named John, Charles, Bryon and Billy.  He is the oldest of the five children.
