  • Griffith was the son of George Willett.  George Willett and his father, William Willett were from Prince George County, Maryland.  George was a sergeant in Col. Coxes' Militia that served under George Rogers Clark at Fort Nelson, VA.  (later the area bacame Louisville, KY).  Their fighting was against Indians who had been incited by the British.  Many bloody battles were fought from 1782 until 1794 when the Indians were defeated at the battle of "Fallen Timbers" in far northwestern Ohio before Kentucky was freed of the threat from Indian attacks.

    George Willett was given a land grant as compensation for his efforts in the War of Independence.  His land grant was at the junction of the Rolling Fork River and Pottinger's Creek adjoining Pottinger's Station in Nelson County, KY., only a few miles from where the David Stiles family settled in Stiles, Ky.  Griffith was born in Kentucky after his parents had settled here.  Pottinger's Station was only a few miles from the Stiles land holding and several of David's children married into Pottinger's Station families.
    Griffith and Rhoda settled on part of the David Stiles land and Calvin Stiles, their descendant still owns that land and farms it.
    Griffith must have been a very prominent and respected man.  In the Nelson Co. Courthouse one can find numerous transactions involving Griffith.  He is witness on many transactions and was involved in buying and selling real estate.
