Mary was born in May 1862.  Mary's father is John W. Pence and her mother was Rebecca Eltengy Stiles.  Her maternal grandfather was Lewis Stiles.  She had two brothers and two sisters, named William, Lafayette, Caroline and Sarah.  She was the fourth oldest of the five children.  She died at the age of 30 in August 1892.
