James was born on July 25th, 1923.  James' father is Henry Francis Mattingly and his mother is Mary Vienna Peterson.  His maternal grandfather was Wesley Wallace Peterson and his maternal grandmother is Vienna Miller.  He has two brothers and a sister, named Glenn, Henry and Frances.  He is the second oldest of the four children.
