  • John was born in New Jersey in 1796 and moved with his family to kentucky when he was 13 years old.  Since he obtained his father's homestead, the land he owned included the Stiles Burying Ground.  He sold adjoining land to that burying ground to the individuals who organized the Union Band Church.  The site of that church is in our current cemetery and our Stiles Monument sets in the approximate location of the original church.  His father, David, had 11 children only one of which died in infancy.  One generation later John had 13 children and lost 4 of them before they married and had children of their own.  In that burying ground he buried Jacob in 1835, Joseph in 1838, Elizabeth in 1839 and David Thomas in 1862.
    
    John, like most of David's children was a slave owner.  The slave schedule says that in 1860 John and Rhoda owned 10 slaves.  The value of his farm that year was $10,000 and the value of his personal property was $5,500.  It would be interesting to find out how that compares to today's money value.  It's reasonable to think that David and his children prospered in Kentucky.
    
    The Civil War took away some of that prosperity.  The slaves were worth a lot of money and when the slaves were gone along with them with a large portion of your net worth.  Without the slaves, the farm lost value since there was no one left to work it.  And, the war itself was costly.  My mother has in her possession a note written on ruled notebook paper that says:
    
    "Received Rolling Fork, July 3rd, 1863 of John Styles one feed of hay and corn for 40 horses and supplies for forty-four men in U.S. Government Service."  It is signed DeWitt E. Smith, Capt 9th Michigan Cavalry  Comp Detachment.
    
    I doubt if John every received payment for his generous offering!!!
