Joseph  was born in 1842.  Joseph 's father was Joseph  Maxwell Tarkington and his mother is Susan Caldwell.  His paternal grandfather is William Lawson Tarkington and his paternal grandmother was Julia Etta Maxwell.  He had four brothers and three sisters, named James, William, Robert, Carl, Julietta, Jennie and Annie.  He had four half-brothers and four half-sisters, named Irvine, Julian, James, Lee, Mariah, Marguerite, Laura and Amelia.  He died at the age of 84 in 1926.
