Eunice Kitchell Stiles

Eunice was born in 1792. She died at the age of 87 in December 1879 in Boyle Co, Ky. (home of her daughter, Letitia. Her burial was in Ryder Cemetery.

General Notes
- Eunice was born in New Jersey and moved with her family to Kentucky. She was 17 when the move took place. It's hard to imagine a teenaged girl leaving her friends and probably a boyfriend and moving out into the wilderness.
  It wasn't long after her move though, that the only real romance that we have in the Ky. Stiles family took place. Joe Maxwell had established a business of hauling merchandise in a flat boat up and down the Rolling Fork River, much like truck drivers today work. He lived in an adjoining county, so carried cargo from that county down the river and back. On one of his trips, his boat was stalled by a log that had fallen across the river. He walked to David Stiles' house to borrow an axe with which to clear the log. When he arrived at the house he saw Eunice sitting at her spinning wheel and he was "smitten" with her. He paid court to her and eventually the two were married. Eunice moved away from the Stiles area and resided near Lebanon, Ky. That was all the story that we knew until I heard from Deborah Shillto, a descendant of Eunice and Joseph. She sent me the "rest of the story". Eunice and Joseph moved into "Maxwell Place". a property of 200 acres located about one-half mile east of Lebanon City limits. The house dates back nearly 175 years. Joseph was born there in 1783, the land having been a grant to the family before Kentucky was cut off from Virginia. Joseph made his home there until his death in 1840 - and his wife stayed on until her death in 1870. Their children were born in this home.
