  • LaFayette Stiles Pence, in his Stiles history, wrote, "I must especially mention Dr. J.C. Maxwell, for he was one of the best men I ever knew.  He was a Post Surgeon in the United States Army and a man of high standing and command during the war.  His honesty of purpose and worth as a man showed him to be a just and generous man towards all alike.  No man was better known or more universally beloved in Central Kentucy than Dr. Maxwell.  In his church work (Northern Presbyterian) he was an active and faithful member."
    I had read that passage about Dr. Maxwell many times, but it just didn't register until I heard from Deborah Shillo, a descendant of Eunice, who is collecting the Maxwell history.  Of course, when you hear that he was a "post surgeon in the United States Army", you should have known, but I didn't!  He was one of the first Marion Countians to declare himself for the Union!!  His first cousin, Chris Gaddie was saying terrible things about the Union and he was part of it!  All of his Stiles, Ky Aunts and Uncles were slave owners! During the war he served as Surgion for the 4th District of Ky.  When Confederate General John Hunt Morgan rode in Lebanon on his second raid - July 5, 1863, he came with the intention of burning the town and he is said to have asked at once for the home of "that man Maxwell".  The raiders left the house in flames and when the blaze finally was extinguished only 4 rooms remained standing.  The house was rebuilt after the war.
