Fern was born on May 19th, 1915.  Fern's father is Walter Mangold and her mother was Mary Emma Thomas.  Her maternal grandfather is Tom R. Thomas and her maternal grandmother was Margaret Ann Stiles.  She had three brothers and a sister, named Hugh, Hubert, Lawrence and Myrtle.  She is the oldest of the five children.
