Luis was born on July 9th, 1959.  Luis' father is Manuel Fernandez Duran and his mother is Virginia Allen Van Cleve.  His maternal grandparents are Bertie A. Van Cleve and Lucy Ann  Johnson.  He has six brothers and two sisters, named Augustin, Bert, Manuel, John, Guillermo, Eduardo, Lucy and Virginia.  He is the eighth oldest of the nine children.
