Clayton was born on February 2nd, 1922.  Clayton's father was George Cleland Shipp.  His paternal grandmother was Lydia Ann Stiles.  He has two brothers and a sister, named Kenneth, Ray and Geraldine.  He is the second oldest of the four children.
